The 12th UMAG OPEN 2020, International Volleyball Tournament, will take place on Saturday 25 January 2020, starting at 9, in the Umag halls at the elementary school of Maria and Lina and in the Stela Maris gymnasium on 6 volleyball courts, in the male categories and female. After last year’s number of 43 teams (20 men’s and 23 women’s teams) from Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Croatia, we expect an equally large number this year, as some others from Italy and from Serbia they announced their arrival.
So for now 60 teams have confirmed their presence in all categories, from 5 countries: Slovenia, Serbia, BiH, Italy and Croatia.
Overall, this is currently the strongest and largest tournament of its kind in Croatia, as well as on the territory of the former state, and also one of the largest tournaments in Europe in terms of character.
The Umag men’s volleyball club (MOK UMAG-CPM UMAGO) organizes this tournament for the 12th consecutive year, which has become famous with the growing number of teams that are registering from year to year. The tournament also includes ex-players from various Croatian, Slovenian and Bosnia-Herzegovina clubs, ex-players from national teams, as well as some still active, which gives at the tournament a special quality, from the big games to the gathering of old and young players and recreation players.
This year we are also introducing the “OVER 40” category (for men and women). In particular, given the highest quality of the tournament (an increasing number of players registered every year), this year we decided to separate the category for the over 40, as the competition has strengthened, giving veterans the opportunity to have the own tournament, so they will be able to measure the forces in their category fairly. The only applicable rule is that in this category players who have not turned 40 CANNOT appear, but vice versa it is allowed.
So this year we will have 4 categories:
Male UNDER (up to) 40 years old
Female UNDER (up to) 40 years
OVER 40 male
Over 40 female
Therefore, the tournament has a great promotional importance for volleyball in the city of Umag, which at the end of recent years has become increasingly popular among young people and with the foundation (in addition to the current women’s club) the men’s volleyball club (MOK UMAG -CPM UMAGO) and its inclusion in regular competitions in the 2nd Croatian Senior Volleyball League, and in youth competitions.
All this is also the result of the work of the club, the sports community of the city of Umag, the tourist office of the city of Umag and the city of Umag, which do a lot to promote the city of Umag as a sports city and involve more and more young people in sports.
The city of Umag is a city that actively takes care with commitment and assistance in the sports activities of its citizens, of all ages and sports categories.
The end of the tournament is expected around 19.30 (with the final games) in the school’s sports hall, followed by a dinner and a joint gathering of all the participants in the tournament, with music and dance, as well as the awarding and distribution of cups and awards.
